Erythromycin topical for acne treatment

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic and is used in acne treatment. The success in reducing lesions of acne vulgaris through the use of erythromycin appears to be due in part to the antibacterial activity of the drug, however, the exact way in which it works it not fully known. It may also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

There are several chemical forms of this acne medication available for oral and topical use to treat infections in the body. Erythromycin is one of the few anti-acne oral antibiotics thought to be safe to take during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How to take erythromycin topical?

  • Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Thoroughly wash the affected area with soap and water and pat dry before applying this acne medication. Moisten the applicator or pad with the medication and lightly spread it over the affected area. Wash your hands before and after using erythromycin.
  • Erythromycin is usually applied in the morning and evening. Use this acne medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the erythromycin in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.
  • It may take several weeks of using this acne medication before you notice improvement in your condition. Consult your doctor if your condition shows no improvement within 6 weeks of using erythromycin.
  • This medicine is for you. Never give it to others, even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.

What is the dosage for erythromycin topical?

Erythromycin should be applied lightly as a thin film to affected area(s) once or twice a day. If there has been no improvement after 6 to 8 weeks, or if the condition becomes worse, treatment should be discontinued, and the physician should be re-consulted.

What happens with an overdose of erythromycin topical?

An overdose of this acne medication applied to the skin is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms. But you can seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of erythromycin.

What happens on missing a dose of erythromycin topical?

Use this acne medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and do back to your regular schedule. Do not use extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What are the possible side effects of erythromycin topical?

Some side effects usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to erythromycin. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:
  • burning, stinging
  • dryness, oiliness
  • itching
  • peeling; or
  • mild eye irritation

Get emergency medical help if you have any of the signs of an allergic reaction including hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. It is advised to stop using erythromycin topical and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • oozing, redness, or other signs of skin infection
  • worsening of your skin condition; or
  • diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

How to store erythromycin?

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F away from heat. Check the expiration date on the tube and discard any expired medication.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of topical erythromycin during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Erythromycin may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this acne medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to stop breastfeeding until your treatment with erythromycin is finished.
