Chemical peels
Acne can be unsightly and uncomfortable, and severe acne can negatively affect a person's self-esteem. Cosmetic chemical peel treatments performed to address acne problems include several different types of acne chemical peels and acne scar peel procedures. The chemical peel treatment is commonly performed on visible body parts such as face, hands and neck. Chemical peels can also be used for back acne, chest acne, and some types of peels can be used for body acne.
How does chemical peel work?
When topical acne medications do not provide satisfactory results, a clearer, healthy-looking complexion may be achieved with a chemical peel for acne or acne scars. Chemical peels for acne work by removing the surface layers of the skin in order to expose the fresh and unaffected layers below. The popularity of chemical peels for acne is growing rapidly, as these treatments are proving to be efficient at treating acne with little risk of complications.
An acne chemical peel is performed by applying a chemical solution to the skin. It rapidly exfoliates the skin, allowing dead skin cells to shed more effectively. By keeping dead skin cells and excess oil from clogging the hair follicle, pore blockages and pimples can be drastically reduced. This exfoliation also reduces the appearance of acne blemishes and scars. Acne chemical peel treatments provide benefits in addition to acne treatment – they can improve the skin's pigmentation and make the skin smoother. There are three general categories of chemical solutions used as acne chemical peel treatments: alphahydroxy acid (AHA) or glycolic acid peels, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels, and phenol peels. AHA peels are the lightest and gentlest; TCA peels are a bit stronger; and phenol peels are the strongest. Each type of peel has advantages and disadvantages.

Candidates for acne chemical peel treatment
Before considering using chemical peels as an acne treatment, one should seek the advice of a trained cosmetic surgeon. The surgeon will be able to determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for chemical peels for acne after studying the skin color, how oily the skin is and how severe the acne condition is.
It is believed that people who have superficial acne or acne scars alone, are the best suited for this type of treatment.
Individuals with severe or very active acne may not be good candidates for acne chemical peels. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are also not good candidates for a chemical peel to treat acne.
Where is acne scar chemical peel performed?
Most chemical peels may be safely performed in a plastic surgeon's office, office-based surgical facility or outpatient surgical center. The plastic surgeon may want the patient to stay overnight in a facility or hospital if other cosmetic procedures are performed simultaneously. FYI: There are also peels that you can do from home. These acne peels can be bought for home use in lighter concentrations to ensure saftely.
Anesthesia
Anesthesia is not required for phenol or TCA peels because the chemical solution acts as an anesthetic. However, sedation may be used before and during the procedure to relax and keep the patient comfortable. No anesthesia is needed for AHA peels since they cause only a slight stinging sensation during application.
Cost of chemical peel
Cost of chemical peel treatment generally varies between $800 and $1200 depending on the size of the affected area and the type of chemical peel that is recommended. Possible additional expenses that add to the cost of chemical peel should be kept in mind, especially with deep chemical peels. They are the cost of anesthesia, use of the surgical facility, and a possible hospital stay. The final cost of the chemical peel procedure depends on the condition of your skin, and other factors unique to your case. Light chemical peels can cost as low as $150, while deep chemical peels are generally the most expensive, as much as $6000. The number of treatments and their spacing depends on the patient’s goals, the condition of the patient’s skin, and other factors.
