Acne Birth Control Pill Treatment
Hormonal therapy for acne treatment includes birth control pills and non-contraceptive anti-androgens. For moderate to severe acne, which over-the-counter and prescription medications can't cure, birth control pills may be prescribed. Currently available birth control pills such as Diane-35®, Tri-Cyclen®, Alesse®, and Yasmin® contain progestins with minimal androgenic or anti-androgenic activity, providing an important therapeutic option for women with acne. The birth control pills that are approved for acne treatment in the U.S are Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Estrostep.

How do birth control pills work?
Low dose estrogen birth control pills reduce the amount of testosterone within the body, and often improve hormonal-based acne breakouts. With the decrease in testosterone production, the amount of oil produced by the sebaceous glands is reduced. The chance of pore blockages is also reduced.

What are the indications of birth control pills?
The proven effectiveness and long-term safety profile of birth control pills supports their use in acne treatment in females: - as additional therapy with topical agents for women who have mild, non-scarring acne and who desire oral contraception;
- as primary therapy in moderate, non-scarring acne in combination with topical therapy and systemic antibiotics;
- in scarring and severe inflammatory acne as one of two preferred methods of contraception in patients treated with systemic isotretinoin.
What are the common usage directions of birth control pills?
Birth control pills should be taken daily, preferably at the same time each day. Three weeks of active pills are taken, followed by one week of placebo reminder pills, during which time menstruation will occur. It can take three months or longer to notice any changes in acne after you begin taking oral contraceptives. It is not uncommon for acne to worsen before it improves.
