Adapalene (Differin) for Acne Treatment

Adapalene or Differin is a retinoid-like topical medication used to treat mild to moderate acne. It is a prescription acne medication that comes in either cream (0.1%) or gel (0.1% and 0.3%). Adapalene cream is less irritating than topical retinoids.

How does adapalene (Differin) work?

Acne forms when hormones trigger an abnormal accumulation of skin cells and an overproduction of oil in skin pores. The pores become clogged, forming a plug, enabling bacteria to grow. This may cause the follicle walls to rupture and inflame the surrounding areas. Adapalene is a medicine for acne treatment, which is known to normalize the improper accumulation of skin cells, effectively treating acne by unplugging clogged pores and helping to keep them clear.

Adapalene also can reduce hyperpigmentation. For those with darker skin tones prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, adapalene cream may be a good choice for acne treatment. It also can help reduce oiliness of the skin.

What are the common usage directions for adapalene (Differin)?

  • Apply adapalene (differin)once per day, usually just before bed.
  • Wash the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser and pat dry. Apply a thin film to the areas of acne and leave on overnight. Slight stinging or burning may be experienced which is normal and goes away in a few minutes.
  • Be patient, you should notice some clinical improvement after 4-8 weeks. Continue with adapalene acne treatment for at least 12 full weeks before judging its effectiveness.
  • Adapalene topical gel or cream should be used with caution by nursing mothers and only in areas away from the chest.
  • Adapalene topical gel or cream should not be used by women who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant during treatment because of the risk of adverse effects on fetal development. There have been isolated reports of birth defects in babies born to women using adapalene acne treatment.
  • The safety and efficacy of adapalene gel and cream has not been studied in relation to children under the age of 12 years.

What happens if a dose of adapalene (Differin) is missed?

If you miss a dose of adapalene, skip the dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not use extra doses, or use for a longer period of time than directed by your doctor or health care professional.

What are the side effects of this acne treatment?

Adapalene(differin) is less irritating than topical retinoids, but can still cause side effects. Local skin reaction e.g. redness, itchiness, burning, increased sensitivity to sunlight, skin peeling, and eye irritation and swelling are associated side effects of adapalene acne treatment.

These side effects are usually at their worst during the first few weeks of treatment, and decrease over time. If any of these side effects become severe, it is wise to tell your physician at the earliest.

How can adapalene(Differin) affect other medicines?

Skin-peeling agents and skin drying preparations, such as medicated cosmetics, soaps, toiletries and other anti-acne preparations increase the likelihood of dryness and irritation of the skin.
